Two mechanisms that facilitate these conditions are a pair bond between mother and father, and attachment between infant and parent: if parents bond emotionally then there is a greater chance of survival. Parental investment refers to the behaviour and resources invested in offspring to achieve this end. Men tend to invest more into their genetic children rather than their step children: spend an equal amount on their genetic children and the stepchildren of their current relationship.
