Psychology 2070A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: The Roaches, Group Cohesiveness, Philip Zimbardo
Document Summary
Group: a collection of 3+ people who interact with one another and are interdependent, in the sense that their needs and goals cause them to rely on one another. In our evolutionary past there was an advantage to establishing bonds with other people. The need to belong is innate and is present in all societies. The groups to which we belong even play an important role in deining who we expect to be in the future. Group membership also plays an important role in motivating people to become involved in social change. Those who identiied most strongly with their group were most likely to engage in social action. Most social groups range in size from 3 to 6 members if the groups become too large you cannot interact with all the members (a college isn"t a social group) Members in a group tend to be alike in age, sex, beliefs, and opinions.
