Chapter 4: social perception: how we come to understand other people: explain some nonverbal behaviors that aid people in social perception. Identify and predict the types of attributions people make for behavior. Social perception is the study of how we form impressions of other people and make inferences about them. It is how we observe and try to explain people. Social perception helps us understand and predict the social world and from an evolutionary perspective, is ensures our survival if we can predict things. Non-verbal behavior is a way in which people communicate intentionally or unintentionally without words. This includes tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures and movements. Non- verbal behavior can communicate emotions, personality and attitudes. We form initial impressions of others based solely on their facial appearance in less than 100 milliseconds. Our ability to read non-verbal cues like facial expressions extend to animals like cats.
