Two types of thinking, automatic and controlled which work in tandem. Usually people exist on autopilot (automatic thinking) but can override the system" and use controlled thinking when needed. When we assess things we put them into categories we already know, such as psych student, rather than starting from scratch. Schemes also effect the rate at which information is processed: (gardner, macintyre, and lalonde,1995) english students were quicker to rank groups by stereotypical characteristics than non-stereotypical.
