Development is cognitive, physical, social and personal. Development proceeds in a somewhat orderly and predictable pattern: milestones appearance of new behaviour that is dev. More advanced: universals similar patterns across all children how they change overtime regardless of environment. Different kids develop at different rates: some kids are earlier than others. Periods of relatively rapid growth (spurts) may appear between periods of slower growth (plateaus): language* word spurts, theorist use uneven growth and change as evidence for qualitatively different periods in dev. Debates: nature vs. nurture, continuity vs. discontinuity, stages, critical vs. sensitive periods, early vs. late experience. Principles occurs at different rates is relatively orderly happens gradually: heredity & environment. Brain development environmental: synapses, myelination, cerebral cortex, specialization and integration, lateralization, plasticity. Piaget"s theory of cognitive development: cognitive development involves, biological maturation, neurons (speed of transmission, # of connections; developmental and, activity, social experiences, equilibration, cognitive development occurs in four fairly discrete stages.
