Psychology 2043A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Flaccid Paralysis, Neuroglia, Intellectual Disability
Document Summary
Human central nervous system- consist of the brain, the spinal cord and all the associated nerves and sense organs. Half of the genes 50,000 are involved here. The spinal cord and the brain are composed of glial cells(glue) The number of glial cells is 10 times the number of neurons. They transmit food from the blood supply to the neurons. Neurons are the basic units of neurological function. Each neuron consists of: the cell body, axon- transmits impulses away from cell body and dendrites- receive impulses from other cells and send them toward the cell body. Neurons do not touch by send electrical impulses between axons and dendrites. Myelination- how the nervous system works, nerve fibers become insulated with a fatty acid and become militated. The cerebrum- they grey matter that control higher intellectual functioning is subdivided into two hemispheres. Joining these two hemi"s is the corpus collosum- band of fibers.
