The nerve pathways- transmit and image to the optical centers of the brain. Visual impairment- ranges from people who have mild visual impairments to those with low vision, and totally blind. Low vision- that a person"s corrected vision is lower then normal. Blindness- individual"s have no sight, or so little that learning takes place through other senses. Visual acuity- the measure of the smallest image distinguishable by the eye. Visual field- the entire area that can be seen when staring straight ahead. Normal is 160-180 degrees and vertical 120 degrees. Visual functioning- refers to what a visually impaired person does with his or her residual vision. Near normal- mild impairments correctable through prescription glasses, able to function without special training. Moderate- moderate reduction, but no significant vision field loss, specialized aids and lighting are needed. Low vision- people who are not fully blind or fully sighted. Blindness- most visually impaired, require education and rehab to function.
