Children develops to get an understanding of the world. Children incorporate new information into their existing schemes. Occurs when children adjust their schemes to fit new information and experiences. Ex: toddlers learns the word car and thinks all road vehicles are cars (assimilation) then realizes they are trucks and motorcycles (accommodation) Grouping of isolated behaviours and thoughts into a higher- order system. Ex: learning how to use tools and group them. Explain how children shifts from one stage of thought to the next. Occurs when child experience congenital conflict, or disequilibrium. Construct understanding of world by coordinating sensory experiences. Habit: based on reflex that has become completely separated from this elicit stimulus. Ex: infants might suck even when no bottle present. Primary circular reaction: scheme based on attempt to reproduce an event initially occurred by chance. Ex: infant accidentally sucks his fingers when placed near mouth, search for fingers to suck them again but fingers don"t cooperate.
