Development: pattern of change that starts with conception and continues thought the life span. Influenced by culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender. Culture: beliefs of a group passed on from generations. Ethnicity: characteristic based on cultural heritage, nationality, race, religion, and language. Socioeconomic status (ses): based on person"s occupational, educational and economic characteristics. Gender: characteristics of people as males and females. Cognitive processes: changes in individual"s thinking, intelligence, and language. Socioemotional processes: changes in individual"s relationship with people, emotions, and personality. Early childhood: end of infancy to 5 to 6 (preschool years) Middle and late childhood: 6-11 (elementary school years) Cohort: group of people born at a similar point of history with similar experiences. Cohort effect: due based on person"s time of birth not actual age. Nature development is a series of distinct stages. Ex: caterpillar to butterfly -> different kind of organism. May have ley determinants of the child"s development.
