Rate is 5x higher in males than females. Melzack and wall insensitivity to pain can lead people to remain in one position too long, causing inflammation of the joints. Failure to feel pain leads one to neglect injuries healing is impeded: injured tissue can become easily infected, which are difficult to treat and can extend to the bone. Miss c. a woman who felt no pain: tests were done and her heart rate, blood pressure and respiration remained normal, she died at 29 from massive infections. There are benefits to pain: the pain that occurs before serious injury has real survival value, the pains that prevent further injury serve as a basis of learning to avoid injurious.
