A part of eyewitness testimony rests on memory. Encoding: when you perceive & pay attention to details in your environment. Retrieval: recall (reporting details) or recognition (recognizing the (stm & ltm) perpetrator) memory. An unknowing participant views a critical event, such as a crime, through a slide sequence, a video recording, or live. The participant is unaware that he/she will be questioned about the event until the event is witnessed. Estimator variables variables that are present at the time of the crime & that cannot be changed (e. g. age of the witness, the amount of lighting, etc. ) System variables variables that can be manipulated to increase (or decrease) eyewitness accuracy (e. g. the type of procedure used by police to interview the witness) Both estimator & system variables can be manipulated in eyewitness laboratory studies. Dependent variables: recall of the event/crime, recall of the perpetrator, recognition of the perpetrator. Recall of the crime & perpetrator can take 2 formats:
