Document Summary

12. 1 how physical, cognitive and emotional developmental during childhood affect expression of psychological disorders. In this book we have used a developmental perspective to understand abnormal behaviour which helps us understand psychological disorder. Important to understand that childhood and adolescence stages of life are characterized by critical physical, cognitive and emotional development. Physical: from crawling walking (all the steps in between), brain growth. Cognition: learn to think and solve problems and use metacognition. Some disorders may lessen symptoms or even disappear as they get older. In dsm-5, iq is not part of the diagnostic criteria and is not used alone to determine criteria for intellectual disability. It is used to measure the extent of the impairment, but not diagnosis it. Impairment: adaptive impairment is necessary for the diagnosis of intellectual disability, but the extent and type of impairment are variable. In school, mainstreaming is done to help children: this means that children with disabilities are put into regular classroom settings.
