Trait: specific and characteristic way someone approaches the world. 3 important point: personality trait vs personality disorder, personality disorder should never be diagnosed after a single brief behavioural observation where the person present enduring way of dealing with the world. Clinician should not diagnose personality disorder without knowing the surrounding context. (ex: must know any other disorder) if has other disorder, personality disorder only diagnosed when the other disorder subside but symptoms still remain. Hard to know when a personality state constitutes a maladaptive personality disorder, because no strong evidence supports a clear boundary between personality traits and personality disorder.
