Document Summary

Brain is made from nerve cells: associated with the processing of information. Thalamus: top of structure, located in center of head which opens up into the multiply folded cerebral that wraps around the lower parts of the brain. Messages travelling from one nerve cell to another. Dendrites: neurons cells body and branching projections receiving end of neutron. Axon: branching projection of cell body transmitting end. Communications between nerve cells take place through the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters. Historically it was thought that nothing happened in the brain unless it received stimulation trough the senses, so sleep was considered to be the result of a dormant brain tested by lily climbing into an isolation tank. There is electrochemical activity throughout the brain, including the rhythmic activity of peacemakers that entrain whole groups of cells. Electrooculography (eog): used for defining the sleep course by detecting eye movements thought electrodes taped close to the eye.
