Increased engagement of the imagination can already result in alterations of consciousness so that there is nothing ordinary about the waking state. Wilhelm wundt: founder of psychology as a laboratory science (late 19th century) Method of introspection (w. wundt): was a version of what franz brentano called inner perception, the discrete noticing of what was happening to mental events as they occurred without interfering with them. The idea was to perceive indirectly out of the corner of one"s mental eye. The alternative to inner perception was inner observation: direct focusing on one"s inner mental life. According to brentano, this would not work because attention would be drawn away from the mental life of thoughts, feelings and violations .
