Document Summary

Developmental psychology examines changes in our biological, physical, psychological, and behavioural processes as we age. Nature and nurture, what control do heredity and environment have over our development. A critical period is an age range in which certain experiences must occur for development to proceed normally. A sensitive period is an optimal age range for certain experience, but if they occur at another time normal development will still occur. Continuity versus discontinuity, is development slow and gradual or progress through stages. Stability versus change, do our characteristics remain consistent as we age. There are five developmental functions: no change. An ability remains relatively constant through life: cstageontinuous change. An ability develops gradually over the years and remains constant over age: s. an ability progresses in stages, rapid shifts to higher levels, inverted u-shape. An ability emerges after birth, peaks, and disappears with age: u shaped function. An ability present early in life, disappears temporarily, and reemerges later.
