Insomnia: the chronic difficulty in falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restful sleep, most common sleep disorder. Affects 10-40% of the population: has biological, psychological, and environmental causes. Narcolepsy: extreme daytime sleepiness and sudden, uncontrollable sleep attacks, can last from less than a minute to an hour, accompanied with cataplexy, sudden less of muscle tone triggered by laughter, excitement, and other strong emotions. Nightmares and night terrors: nightmares: are frightening dreams. Virtually everyone has them at some point: night terrors: more intense than nightmares. Occur during 3 or 4 sleep: sleeper sits up and starts screaming, 6% of children, 1-2% of adults. Why we dream: freud analytic theory, main purpose od dreaming is wish fulfillment - the gratification of our unconscious desires, activation-synthesis theory, during rem sleep the brain stem is bombarding our higher brain centres with random neural activity.
