Motivation: a process that influences the, direction, persistence, vigour, those thoe study motivation identify factors that move us towards our goals, of goal directed behaviour. Incentives: stimuli that pull an organism towards a goal (ex. food) Incentive value that person places on goal: motivation = expectancy x incentive value. Perspectives on motivation: extrinsic motivation: performing an activity to obtain an external reward or to avoid punishment. I want to learn as much as possible for this class : students who value mastery, study hard, think about the material deeply, and display better long-term retention than their peers. Involve social comparisons: predicts high effort and somewhat higher course grades, ex. Freud: psychodynamic view, unconscious motivations, sexual and aggression (dual instinct) Humanistic approach: maslow"s hierarchy of needs, need hierarchy: a progression of needs containing deficiency needs at the bottom and growth needs at the top, physiological needs safety needs belongingness and love needs esteem needs.
