Document Summary
Psych 1000- chapter 2: science is an approach to asking and answering questions about the universe, the scientific method is used. Studying behaviour scientifically: scientific attitudes, scientific processes, types of variables, correlation research, experimental; research, stats. Scientific attitudes: curiosity, why, skepticism, show me evidence, might there be better evidence, open-mindedness, recognize that the results and findings may go against your instincts. Bystander effect: kitty genovese: 38 witnesses but, no one called to help, original explanation- people just don"t care anymore, bystander apathy- perhaps it was diffusion of responsibility. In an emergency if multiple people are present the likelihood of help coming is reduced. Understanding behaviour: hindsight, most common method we use to try and understand behaviour in our everyday life, main problem = related past events can be explained in creative, reasonable and sometimes contradictory ways, prediction, control, and theory building.
