Document Summary
A pattern of cognitive appraisals, physiological responses & behavioral tendencies that occur in response to a perceived imbalance between situational demands & the person"s ability to cope with them. Stressors: potentially threatening events: major negative events- life events (support provided, microstressors- daily hassles (no support, catastrophic events- natural disasters, war, controllable vs uncontrollable stress (uncontrolled=learned helplessness) Devastating effects on survivors (some develop ptsd) More men than women die by suicide (they choose more lethal methods) People attempt suicide just to get attention. If you talk to someone about their suicidal feelings, they"re more likely to attempt suicide. All those who commit suicide are depressed. If someone wants to commit suicide, there are no ways to stop them. Suicide is not hereditary (repeats in families, but more of a learned phenomenon) Negative attitudes (towards themselves, not others thought) Problem-solving deficits (not true, but their solutions are negative) Rumination: presence of a psychological disorder.
