How do we decide what is "abnormal" judgement of abnormality: dysfunctional for person or society, deviant: violates social norms, distressing to self or others. Psychological disorders: anxiety disorders, ex: ocd, phobias, mood (affective) disorder, ex: mania, depression, bipolar. Somatoform disorders: soma means body, disorders related to body, emotion problems get expressed as physical symptoms, ex: hysterical blindness, dissociative disorders, dissociation of identities, or from your identities, multiple personality disorder. Schizophrenia: psychotic disorder, personality disorders, different because they are pervasive, engraved in us and probably last all of life. Feelings of tension: apprehension - usually fear, cognitive symptoms, worry, thoughts about inability to cope, physiological symptoms. Increased hr: muscle tension, other autonomic arousal symptoms, behavioural symptoms, avoidance of feared situations, decreased task performance, disorders. Strong, irrational fears of objects or situations: generalized anxiety disorder. State of diffuse, "free-floating" anxiety: panic disorder. Sudden, unpredictable, intense; person may feel they are dying: ocd, obsessive thoughts. Japan: taijin kyofusho, hikkomori: north america: eating disorders.
