How do we decide what is "abnormal" judgement of abnormality: dysfunctional for person or society, deviant: violates social norms, distressing to self or others. Strong, irrational fears of objects or situations: generalized anxiety disorder. State of diffuse, "free-floating" anxiety: panic disorder. Sudden, unpredictable, intense; person may feel they are dying: ocd, obsessive thoughts. Japan: taijin kyofusho, hikkomori: north america: eating disorders.
