Document Summary
Chapter 3 - biological foundations of behaviour/the nervous system. Neural basis of behaviour: to understand how the brain controls behaviour, we must understand how its individual parts and cells work and how they interact with each other. Neurons: neurons are the basic building blocks of the nervous system. Support neurons and hold them in place, outnumber neurons about 10-1: also transport nutrients, form myelin sheath and absorb dangerous toxins, form the blood brain barrier to keep out toxins. Electrical activity of neurons: neurons generate electricity and release chemicals that help them communicate with muscles, glands and other neurons, conduct electricity through action potentials. In fluid outside neuron, high [na+] and [cl-], and inside neuron, high [protein a-] and [k+: results in uneven distribution of charges creating a resting potential of -70 millivolts.
