Document Summary
Chapter 8 human memory & information processing. Memory processes that allow us to record and later retrieve experience and information. Ebbinghaus: studied rate at which new information is forgotten. Cognitive revolution (1960"s): mind is a processing system that encodes, stores and retrieves info. Encoding getting information into system by translating it into neural code your brain processes. Retrieval pulling information out of storage when we need it. First published study of memory in 1885 (invented the nonsense syllable) 2 major types: cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) & ccc (consonant-consonant-consonant) Purpose was to attempt to eliminate effects of prior knowledge on learning of materials: Read list of nonsense syllables to beat of metronome. Attempted to form association between current stimuli and next stimuli on list (one he can"t see) Items at beginning and end of lists are more easily learned. Works are more easily learned with this method than either cvc or ccc stimuli. Method also provides for a measure of retention called savings.
