Political Science 1020E Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Political Philosophy, James Fitzjames, Henry Sidgwick
Document Summary
One simple principle: the optimistic view is that once democratic decision making procedure, the work of political philosophy is over and we can leave all decisions to the electoral machine. There are still threats, as mill suggests, like the tyranny of the majority. Mill"s on liberty is concerned with the question of the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. he argued that there should be a limit to the state"s power. Anarchism says there is no legitimate power, while hobbes would say the state has no reason to pay any attention to the liberties of its citizens. Mill says that if given freedom, some will surely abuse it. Life without the law is hardly worth living. Mill observes that some socities have solved this by not allowing/suppressing some religions, imposing censorship on media and outlawing sexual practices.
