Appropriate preparation for procedures helps to decrease the childs and familys anxiety level, promote the childs cooperation, and support the childs family coping skills. May include psychological prep explanation and education or physical prep. General guidelines for preparation include: provide a description of and the reason for the procedure using appropriate language, describe where the procedure will occur. Introduce strange equipment: describe how long it will last. Identify any unusual sensations that may occur during the procedure. Inform the child about any pain or other expected sensations that may be involved. Identify any special care required after the procedure. Younger children respond to play materials while older children benefit from viewing peer modeling films. During procedure use firm, positive, confident approach to provide child with security. Being held down or restrained is often more traumatizing to the young child than the procedure itself, use alternative methods such as positions that provide comfort for the child to keep the child still.
