Med surg nursing page 484-492 perioperative concepts and nursing management. Care of the patient in the postanesthia care unit. Phase 1 pacu used during immediate recovery phase. Phase 2 pacu the patient is prepared for self care or care in the hospital or an extended care setting. Phase 3 pacu the patient is prepared for discharge. Recliners rather than stretchers or beds are standard in many phase 3 units. Transferring patient from or to pacu is the responsibility of the anesthesiologist. Transporting patient involves special considerations of the inscision site, potential vascular changes, exposure. Orthostatic hypotention may occur when a patient is moved too quickly from one position to another so pt must be moved slowly and carefully. As soon as pt is removed he his replaced with a dry gown. Covered w a light weight blanket and warmed, all side rails up.
