Thinking like a nurse, you have to be one to know how to do it. Being a nurse involves not only acting like a nurse, but thinking like a nurse and viewing the world through the eyes of a nurse. Nurses, she says, have been given the awesome responsibility of the care of the sick, without being given the education and resources necessary to fulfill that mission. Nurses view the world through the prism of that human vulnerability and capture, in their educated glance, the dangers of the ordinary. They combine that educated glance with another crucial nursing skill the ability to protect patients from danger without making them feel endangered. Although she is extremely knowledgeable as a nurse, as a patient she had difficulty applying her nursing gaze to her own environment and could not possibly protect herself from danger. Discussion about the nature of health revolves around its relationship to disease, illness, and wellness.
