Self concept definition represents people"s complex reflection of their cultural heritage, their environment, their upbringing and education, their basic personality traits, and cumulative life experiences. Self-concept has personal physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions, linked to well-being and quality of life. Mirrors life experiences and incorporates judgment of important people in person"s life. A strong sense of self can be a protective factor for coping with chronic illness. When experiencing a major health disruption, it causes alteration to the way people think, feel, and value their sense of self and the way they communicate with others in their immediate environment. Self-concept creates and reflects a person"s personal reality in many aspects of life. Personal/work relationships, careers, life choices and as a determinant of what is important to each person. A person"s self concept consists of multiple self-images. Different aspects of self-concept become visible, depending on the situation in which people find themselves (ex: star athlete may be failing school)
