Power: capacity to influence others who are in a state of dependence. Legitimate power: power that comes from a persons job or organization. Ex military ranking, vs academic staff dont have ranking, all profs. Reward power: power derived from the ability to provide positive outcomes and prevent negative outcomes. Some ppl actually have power to give raises and time off and rewards. Some ppl dont have that power but they can give compliments and stuff and thats a reward too. Ie applies to everyone from janitor to ceo. Coercive power: power derived from the use of punishment and threat. This isn"t part of legitimate power bc two factory workers in same position can use coercive! Applies to everyone from janitor to ceo. Referent power: power derived from being well liked by others. We like these ppl, they influence us, so we want to be obiendent to them and give them respect/power. We want to identify with the power holder.
