Management and Organizational Studies 2181A/B Chapter 10: OB-Chapter 10 Communication
Document Summary
Communication: the process by which information and meaning are transferred from a sender to a receiver. Communicating helpful information may be viewed as a form of citizenship behaviour. Measurement, feedback, and management cannot occur without communication. Individual differences (i. e. personality) can both help and hinder communication. Communication plays a central role in all the topics we have covered so far. Source of information uses verbal or written language, as well as nonverbal cues, to encode the information into a message (e. g. waving arm up and down to mean to go faster) The message is transmitted to a receiver, who interprets/decodes the message to form understanding of the information it contains. 2 broad categories of interpersonal communication within work settings: Face to face communication: the exchange of information and meaning when one or more individuals are physically present, and where communication occurs without the use of any mediating technology.
