Motivation: a set of energetic forces that determine the direction, intensity and persistence of an employee"s work effort. Engagement: a current corporate buzzword for motivation. Eg. (cid:498)engaged(cid:499) employees are those who invest themselves in their job and bring a lot of energy to their work. Expectancy theory describes how a person decides to behave- people select one behavior over others based on the expected result of the selected behavior. Not explaining what motivates individuals, but rather how they make decisions to achieve the end they value. Expectancy: the belief that one"s effort will result in obtaining a desired performance goal. Effort performance can be hindered by: lack of necessary resources, lack of supportive leadership, low self-efficacy. No talent on sport even you are trying hard. Self-efficacy: a person"s belief in their ability to perform successfully. Enhanced through: past accomplishments, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and emotional cues. )nstrumentality: the belief that successful performance will result in some outcomes.
