Society - the structured social relations and institutions among a large community of people which cannot be reduced to a simple collection or aggregation of individuals. Sport is intimately connected to the most significant social institutions of canadian society. Sport is an extremely popular social phenomenon that has exploded in visibility and popularity in the last 30 years. Female athletes are regularly marginalized and under-represented in the media. In 2018, women comprised only 29 of 100 active members of the ioc, and in a 2012-2013 report, women held only 17% of head coaching positions in canadian interuniversity sport (cis: down from 19% in 2010-2011. It is important to recognize that just as sport is shaped by the social world around us, it also actively shapes the social world.
