Kinesiology 2250A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Consumerism
Document Summary
The future of sports cannot be separated from general social and cultural factors but neither can it separated from the visions we have for sports. Sports are social constructs meaning that the dominant sports at any particular place and time are constructed with the values and ideas of those who have power in a group or society. People often modify sports or develop alternative sports that challenge current power relations and promote ideas that resist or oppose people with power. Pleasure and participation sports: a sport form that often coexists with power and performance sports is organized around a combination of pleasure and participation. Power and performance sports will grow faster than pleasure and participation sports. Social economic and demographic factors support growth in both sport forms. Predicting the future is less important than knowing about current trends and using that knowledge to participate in creating the future.
