Sociology of sport textbook notes (read slides with) Intimidation refers to words, gestures, and actions that threaten violence or aggression. Like aggression, intimidation is used to dominate or control another person. Blood sports were popular among the ancient greeks and the roman empire. Deaths occurred regularly in connection with the ritual games among the mayans and aztecs. Tournaments among the medieval and early modern europe were designed for war training and had war-like consequences. Folk games were loosely controlled by rules resulting in many injuries and death rates that would be shocking if they happened today. Studies show that as sports became more formally organized, official rules became common and firm and thus the violence decreased significantly greater emphasis on self-control and physical contact which reduced the expression of aggressive impulses during competition. Just because violence in sport is not new, that does not mean that it is a natural or inevitable part of sports.
