Access to Water on Canada’s Reserves
• 112/633 reserves do not have access to safe drinking water
o Even though Canada has one of the richest sources of water around
• There is a decline in water quality
o Caused by human pollution
• A lot of houses to not have piping
o But the government does not want to implement this because
▪ Most natives do not have heating
• Pipes freezing etc
Health Concerns
• Rashes
• GI issues
• Diabetes complications
• H1N1 epidemic
o Way higher in these communities because you could not stop the spread
through hand washing and other sanitation practices
• Infections diseases
o Bronchitis
o Strep throat
o Colds
o Ear infections
• Self Word Damage
o For youth who need to result to a pail for a washroom
• Bromide in Water
o Turns to a carcinogen Bromate when drank
• Methane in water
o Levels are double of what the Canadian government finds acceptable
The federal government gives only 80 per cent of the cost and most First Nations can't
raise that 20 per cent. The First Nations have very little authority over their own budget
and they have to get permission from the ministry for it
• Meaning there are very many barriers
o Cost of modernizing houses and water treatment would cost 3.5 million
▪ And the reserves infrastructure budget is 600,000$
• Houses are over crowding
o As many as 18 people per house
