Clean Running Water Still a Luxury on Many Native Reserves

• Most first nations have water fountains in the community store
o They use outdoor bathrooms

▪ 5 years ago they installed a water treatment plant in the main
part of the reserve but since then progress has been slow
• Over 60% of the 1500 residents do not have access to
indoor plumbing
▪ Bringing supplies to them is hard because they have no roads
• Fly-ins are expensive
Health Problems
• Manitoba reserves have some of the worst water problems in the country
o 6% of homes on reserves have NO water at all
• Liberal government has promised to spend 5.5 million dollars to help improve
infrastructure
• First Nations are responsible for 20% of the costs of maintaining water sewage
systems
o The federal government has to cover the rest
▪ However in many cases it is not enough
• Whe ater is aailale it usually is’t leaed properly
OR compromised by corroded pipes
• Over 120 First Nations communities were under a health Canada water advisory
as of October 31st
