Generic drugs are lower quality and less safe than brand name drugs. People tend to feel very uneasy about switching to generic drugs: although provincial drug plans and hospitals use them. Physicians tend not to talk about generic drugs with their patients due to: loyalties for companies, lack of information, patient pressure. Generic drugs have the same medicinal ingredients as their brand name counterparts. The only difference: the patents on brand name have expired and allow generic companies to produce their products. These products tend to be 45% less expensive. Usually are a different shape or colour: sometimes generic drugs are made by their brand name companies. Usually however they are made by generic companies like apotex. All drugs have to go through the same review by health canada: the ingredients are checked and verified by the same federal guidelines as brand name companies.
