Chapter 11 mental health issues and treatment. 1/5 canadians experience a diagnosable mental health disorder every year while 20% of older adults may meet the criteria for a mental disorder including dementia. Mental disorders such as anxiety, mood, impulse-control, and substance-use disorders are the lowest in older adults when compared to other adult age groups. The balance of protective and risk factors determines whether the psychological disorder evolved earlier in life. Some behaviours that are characteristic as abnormal include the feeling of subjective or personal distress, impairment in everyday life, putting themselves or other people at risk of harm, and engaging in unacceptable social and cultural behaviour. An example of someone with a psychological disorder would be a hoarder who collects things until their homes become uninhabitable they are putting themselves and possibly others at harm. Behaviours that meet abnormal conditions are diagnosed according to the dsm which is the major reference other countries use the icd.
