The communication predicament of ageing model (cpa) conceptualized by ryan, giels, Bartolucci, and henwood in 1986 examined age stereotypes and ageism through the lends of language and social psych, specifically communication accommodation theory (cat) Cpa has profound heuristic value in guiding research on how age stereotypes constrain intergenerational interactions, reducing degree to which older adults can demonstrate competent behaviours and experience a positive sense of personhood. Older persons with disabilities more likely to experience stronger variants of communication predicament due to reactions of others to the cues associated with disability. Communication also offers powerful means to countering age biases and inappropriate communication so they can avoid (or at least reduce) negative consequences. Elders have wisdom, resources, knowledge, that can be passed on through communication. Assertive communication responding proactively in difficult situations rather than reacting passively or aggressively: calm, direct, honest expression of feelings and needs, key aspect in gaining control.
