Stress definition: general physiological and emotional state that accompanies the stress response. Stressor: situation/event that triggers physical and emotional reactions. Autonomic nervous system: branch of the nervous system that controls basic body processes; consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. Parasympathetic division: moderates the excitatory effect of the sympathetic division, slowing metabolism and restoring energy supplies. In control when you are relaxed; aids in digesting food, storing energy, promoting growth. Sympathetic division: reacts to danger or other challenges by almost instantly accelerating body processes. Activated during times of arousal, including exercise, and when there is an emergency: severe pain, anger, fear. Uses neurotransmitter norepinephrine to exert their actions on nearly every organ etc to help body handle emergency. Tells body to stop storing energy and use it in response to crisis.
