Cities such as shanghai, beijing, seoul, and taipei are the second tier but many of them are quickly catching up. Mongolia, which are leaving that era to history: urban development in the region was heavily influenced by the cold war, which lingers on in the korean peninsula and in the ongoing tensions between taiwan and mainland. East asia"s cities have been the command centers for the prodigious economic advances in much of the region. The region houses two of the world"s largest economies, china and japan, and is also the world"s largest exporter. East asia"s cities are more successful in coping with rapid growth and large size. They were forced to accept the small peninsula of macau. Macau was the only portuguese settlement in east asia. Macau was largely for tourism and gambling: the treaty ports of china, western colonial powers had the greatest impact on the growth of cities in modern china.
