Key recommendations in preventing sprawl: protect the environment. Close to 80% of canadians live in an urban area: defined as a place with 10,000 or more people. Four regions have experienced extreme population growth. Greater montreal area: grew 7. 6% between 1996 and 2001. And the urbanization grew at a rate 2x more than that. Huge issue note now that we are under the kyoto protocol on climate change. It consumes large quantities of land: segregates houses from sops and workplaces, depends on private cars, has little regard for the natural environment. Cities are defined by density and industry: densely populated and diverse. However north american cities have become less dense and less diverse in their physical layout these past couple of years. With wider highways, expanding boundaries and higher buildings: we are loosing the suburbs. And they are being replaced by sprawl. Which has less public transportation, driveways instead of porches. Railways used to be the main form of transportation.
