Divided into northern and southern ontario: northern: canadian shield and hudson bay lowlands, resource hinterland, tourism, forestry and mining, southern: great lakes-st lawrence lowlands, agricultural-industrial core, hot and humid summers. Canadians living in provinces less prosperous than ontario have benefited from equalization payments. Ontario and alberta have been the major source of tax revenue. Vignette 5. 2 contrasting sub-regions: northern and southern ontario. Southern and northern ontario have contrasting physical conditions, geographic situations, distinct economies, and population distribution. Climate dominated by long, warm summers with hot and humid weather caused by tropical air masses. Winter caused by arctic air masses, proximity to the great lakes affects local weather. Fertile soils and warm summer allow for most of canadian agricultural output, specialized crops include: grain, corn, soybeans and sugar beets.
