(cid:862)geography is destiny(cid:863): meaning that for most people, place is the most powerful determinant of their life chances, experiences and opportunities. Place: refers to community/region where one was born & raised, not just area. This (cid:862)pla(cid:272)e(cid:374)ess(cid:863) plays a role in shaping attitudes & values of the inhabitants of that community/region. The experience of sharing a common space leads to the formation of a regional identity and regional consciousness. Regional identity: person"s association with a place/region & sense of belonging to a collectivity. Regional consciousness: identification with a place or region, including the strong feeling of belonging to that space & the willingness to advocate for regional interests. Vignette 1. 1: curiosity the starting point of geography. The ancient greeks were curious about the world around them.
