Many landscapes are unable to be observed for patterns and other distributions so maps must be used. Some things like major cities are too spatially extensive to be studied as a whole. Many distributions (such as language usage) are not visible features. Many interactions may not be directly visible. Cartography - the science of making maps. Modern map making originated in the 17th century. The rise of nationalism made it important to map out borders of countries. All maps are distorted - they portray a sphere on a 2d surface. Distortion is necessary since map is smaller and it puts emphasis on the select portion of reality.
