Most of the processes covered in unit 3 arise from energy received from sun. Latter part of unit will consider a scary source of external energy -the collisions b/w earth and asteroids, meteoroids and comets. Weather and climate processes have always had energy supplied by sun (not inside earth) Processes on earth have influenced weather and climate by interfering w sun"s energy i. e. reflecting dust in atmosphere from volcanic eruptions today, primary climate-changing influence is human-related processes -greenhouse gases. Co2 & ch4 (methane) -currently increasing most rapidly and have the property of reflecting infrared radiation back to earth (rather than allowing escape to space) Sometimes called earth"s twin d/t size (not much else) ~2x as much solar radiation than earth gets - doesn"t explain venus" high heat surface. In early days both had oceans of water & roughly similar greenhouse made of co2 emissions from volcanoes. Quickly, venus" greenhouse strengthened - water evaporated leaving surface temp 460 c.
