First it was said to be an explosive hole made by a gas-rich volcano: no true volcanic rocks were found nearby. Second it was called the weathered-out top of a salt dome: no salt anywhere. Late 1870s: rumors circulated that chunks of silver had been found lying on the ground near coon. It contained 7. 9% nickel: mineral collector recognized that this material prob came from space. Material was named for the canyon diablo, acknowledged as being from a meteorite. Canyon diablo meteorite was the remnants of the impactor which caused the crater now called meteor. Crater or barringer crater: barringer = a geologist who tried to convince the world that this was a meteorite, established the high ir anomaly characteristic of extraterrestrial source. Just over 1km across and is in almost a perfect circle. 45m rim: nearly uniform all the way around.
