Why were people excited about canals: there are no canals on mars. Why or why not: yes it has two. However, the phoenix mars lander, viking 1, viking 2, and pathfinder explored mars"s surface. Note similarities/differences to the formation (and characteristics) of atmospheres on venus, mercury and earth. Was there ever liquid water on the surface: yes and no. Water molecules are massive enough for mars to keep, but ultraviolent radiation breaks them up. Hydrogen is light and ends up escaping but the oxygen ends up in the soil. The current atmospheric pressure is too low to keep it from boiling away to vapour. Yes there was liquid water: what evidence do we have for weather, storms or wind on the surface of mars, we have seen visible weather patterns on earth. Process of local heating not only causes winds but is a key to the summer onset of global dust storms.
