It is said that the sacred black kaaba stone to which muslims pay homage in mecca is a large meteorite, but it is off limits for examination. Some european philosophers and scientists thought that meteorites were heavenly bodies that somehow fell to earth, but most thought that the cosmos had long since been cleaned out of all solid material, therefore meteorites must be wholly terrestrial. In 1774, physicist ernst chladni published a book in which he compiled all data he could find about several meteorites: although he is now considered the father of meteorites, his book was ridiculed when published. In 1795, a 25kg meteorite fell in the town of wold cottage, england, and was witnessed by many people. It fell in broad daylight, was collected and studied: scientists decided that it was from outer space, uwo has a collection of meteorites, footage of meteorites flying in the sky.
