Professionalism, profession and the virtues of the good physician. Professionalism the process of professionalization, and teaching of professional behaviour have become dominant concerns of medical educators, practicing physicians and professional associations. Professionalism has become accepted as a watchword for qualities of conduct that are proper to professions. Many occupations today lay claim to the nickname of profession. Traditionally, a smaller amount of professions have been called learning professions due to their educational breadth and importance in satisfying a specific human need. These include medicine, law, ministry, and in some cases the military. These are sociologically defined professions, yet occupy a special niche among various occupations. The special claim lies in expertise as opposed to dedication to self-interest. It involves altruism and suppression of self-interest when it is required. Profession to declare aloud, to proclaim something publicly. Professionals make a profession of a specific activity and conduct, and commit themselves.
